Finpecia is a medication prescribed for the treatment of male pattern baldness, also referred to as androgenetic alopecia. The active ingredient in Finpecia is Finasteride. This medication is not intended for use by women nor is it effective for hair loss due to vitamin deficiencies, alopecia areata, or other types of alopecia.
Finasteride functions by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into its more potent form, 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The primary mechanism involved in the progression of male pattern baldness is 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone, which inhibits hair follicle activity. By reducing the concentration of 5-DHT in the bloodstream, Finasteride aids in preventing hair loss and fostering hair regrowth. It is ineffective on hair follicles in women and children. Finpecia is effective in preventing hair loss on the crown and frontal areas of the scalp but does not address receding hairlines near the temples. Finasteride is not sanctioned for use by women or children.
Finpecia is available in tablet form. The typical dosage for most men dealing with androgenetic alopecia is one tablet. The tablets should be ingested orally and followed by a sufficient amount of water. It may take several months to experience the full effects of Finpecia.
Potential side effects include erectile dysfunction, decreased ejaculate volume, and reduced libido.
In rare instances, Finasteride may lead to gynecomastia (breast enlargement), allergic reactions (such as shortness of breath, wheezing, skin rash, hives, urticaria, and swelling), and testicular pain. Some users have reported experiencing depression, acne, and weight gain during Finpecia treatment.
